The classic king penguin day is the default — the most reviewed, and the only one that lists park entry in its $119 price. Choose the small-group day for 13 people at most.
Three day trips with ten or more reviews go to the king penguins, and all three run the same loop: ferry to Porvenir, the reserve, a second ferry home. They differ in group size, the price and whether the park fee is inside it. A fourth listing has a single review so far.

Also listed: a full-day king penguin tour at $130 with one review so far.

Only one of the day’s fifteen hours is with the penguins; the rest is two ferries and about seven hours in a minibus. The order of stops depends on ferry times and the visiting slot the reserve gives each group, so lunch may come before or after the colony. Do not book a flight or a bus for the same evening.
Guests on all three tours describe guanacos, rheas and foxes from the road, and dolphins from the ferry. Guests rate the guides highest on all three — see the Punta Arenas penguin tour reviews. The ferry has a café with snacks and coffee; the reserve has no restaurant, and card payment in Porvenir is not reliable — bring Chilean pesos.

Check datesParque Pingüino Rey is a private nature reserve on Bahía Inútil that admits small ranger-led groups once an hour. It opens October to May, charges CLP 20,000 per adult at the gate and closes on days of extreme weather. Tours book your slot; travelling on your own, you reserve it on the reserve’s website.

Only the classic king penguin day lists the park fee as included; on the other two you pay CLP 20,000 per adult at the gate. That adds about $20 per adult, which makes the budget day roughly equal to the classic one — every tour’s full cost is on the Punta Arenas penguin tour price page. Lunch is never included — bring cash or a packed lunch.
“≈” adds CLP 20,000 (about $20) to the listed price. The reserve’s official fee is CLP 20,000; one listing still shows an older CLP 18,000. Ask your operator if the listing and the gate disagree.

It is worth it if king penguins are the reason you came — this is the only king penguin colony in South America you can reach on a day trip. It is not worth it as your first penguin trip: on Isla Magdalena you get far more birds, much closer, in a third of the time. Guests who did both usually say so.
the king penguins are the point: one hour in a wild colony, with a ranger, in a day of ferries and steppe.
Compare with Isla Magdalena: more birds, closer, in five hours.
“The tour to see the king penguins themselves was truly fantastic. As for the other stops, they weren't particularly interesting for us, but the hour spent with the king penguins was worth spending a day in the car.”
King penguins can be seen from October to May, longer than Magdalena’s season, but on fewer days at the start and end. The reserve opens Wednesday to Sunday in October, Tuesday to Sunday from November to March, and only Thursday to Sunday in April and May. Guests counted about 160 birds in early March and about 100 in April.

Bring cash in Chilean pesos, a packed lunch or money for one, warm waterproof layers and a charged phone. Lunch, the park fee on two tours and snacks on the ferry are paid locally, and card payment fails where the signal is weak.
One hour with the king penguins — the classic day lists park entry in its $119. Shorter day? Isla Magdalena.

About two hours by ferry to Porvenir and then about 1.5 hours by road to Bahía Inútil, so 3.5–4 hours each way. The return usually crosses at Primera Angostura, which is why tours take 14–15 hours.
Not very — you stand behind a rope line, and guests report distances from about 20 m on good days to 100 m on others. Binoculars are useful and a zoom lens is close to essential for photos.
Yes, by rental car with the Punta Arenas–Porvenir ferry, but you must book a visiting slot on the reserve’s website first. Many drivers stay a night in Porvenir to avoid racing the last ferry back.
No. It opens Wednesday to Sunday in October, Tuesday to Sunday from November to March and Thursday to Sunday in April and May, and closes 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. It also shuts on days of extreme weather.
Sometimes. King penguins breed on a cycle longer than a year, so chicks of different ages can be in the colony; a guest in February 2025 saw mating pairs and young birds together.
No. The king penguin day alone takes 14–15 hours and goes south-east by ferry, while Magdalena is a separate boat trip north-east of the city. Plan them on two days.
The tour changes its route, is rescheduled or refunded. In rare cases the return crossing cannot run and guests stay a night in Tierra del Fuego at their own cost — one operator warns of this the day before.
It is allowed, and children under 10 enter the reserve free, but the day is long and mostly seated in a minibus. Families with young children usually prefer the five-hour Isla Magdalena trip.
